This week’s featured Band of the Week shows us that every great adventure begins with a plan. Sometimes it’s a garage. Sometimes it’s a basement. For Hoist the Colors, it all started in a living room in El Segundo, California, where a group of friends gathered in 2007 with little more than acoustic instruments they barely knew how to play, a love for punk rock, and a desire to learn traditional Irish rebel songs. Originally hoping to earn a few free drinks at local pubs, they began charting a course that would carry them far beyond their hometown.

Several of the band’s founding members grew up together and attended El Segundo High School, building lasting friendships long before they became bandmates. Even their name was born from a shared moment. While watching a movie together, they heard the phrase “Hoist the Colors,” a pirate’s call to raise a ship’s flag before battle. Amused by the imagery, they adopted the name, joking that they were a bunch of kids who wanted to “attack” every place they played. It was a fitting description for a band whose neighborhood pub singalongs soon gave way to packed clubs, festival stages, and laying siege to audiences far beyond the South Bay.

Classic Americana, bluegrass, traditional Irish folk, and Southern California punk rock, all find their ground in Hoist the Colors. Mandolin, banjo, fiddle, accordion, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars all blend harmoniously with driving punk rhythms, creating music that is made for neighborhood pubs, all the way to festival stages. Their latest full-length album, Dear Wanderlust, marks their first album in nearly a decade. Released through Hey!Fever Records and produced by Paul Miner at Buzzbomb Studios, the record explores the emotional highs and lows of the human experience while carrying the same sense of hope reflected in the band’s own words. Over time, what began as an acoustic side project evolved into a nationally recognized touring band, earning praise from Alternative Press as an Artist to Watch while steadily expanding their sound and their audience.

Their journey has taken them from local scenes to some of punk rock’s biggest stages. They’ve shared bills with legendary bands including Dropkick Murphys, Bad Religion, and Pennywise, performed under the lights of the historic Hollywood Palladium, become returning favorites aboard Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise, and continued making appearances at The Fest in Florida, one of independent punk’s most celebrated annual gatherings. Closer to home, they continue bringing their music to California audiences through venues like Alex’s Bar, Deep End Live, and performances at Bobby V’s Cocktails, all while balancing regional club dates with national festivals and tours that keep them constantly moving.

Yet for all the miles traveled and stages conquered, Hoist the Colors has never forgotten where the journey began. Every December they return home to El Segundo to host their annual Hoist the Holidays benefit show at South Bay Customs. More than just a concert, the event has grown into a hometown tradition, bringing together local bands, vendors, raffle prizes, and members of the community for an evening centered around giving back. Admission comes through toy donations or monetary contributions, with every gift supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and helping provide free cancer treatments for children. It has become a celebration of music, generosity, and gratitude toward the community that supported them from the very beginning.

Every musician dreams of opportunities. Bigger stages. Longer tours. Larger audiences. But perhaps the more meaningful question is what you choose to do once those opportunities arrive. Hoist the Colors has answered that question not only through the music they create, but through the people they continue to lift up along the way. They remind us that success isn’t measured solely by the stages you reach, but by your willingness to return home, give something back, and leave the places that believed in you a little stronger than you found them, making Hoist the Colors — a band worth featuring — and always worth watching.
