This week’s featured Band of the Week knows that making music is only part of the story. The work rarely ends when the guitars are put away. Every show, every release, and every opportunity begins long before the sound equipment comes on. For De La Rocka, that work belongs to Panu De La Rocka, a musician who has spent the past several years making all the pieces fit and wearing more hats than most people ever see. Songwriter, guitarist, manager, booking agent, tour organizer, and the driving force behind an independent project that has grown from a solo idea into one of Finland’s rising psychobilly acts, every role serves the same purpose: giving the music every chance to reach the people waiting to hear it.

That approach first took shape in 2022 following the end of Panu’s previous band, Graveyard Bashers. Instead of slowing down, he launched De La Rocka as a solo studio project before realizing the songs belonged on a stage. The pounding upright bass, layered guitars, and gang vocals demanded a full band, leading him to assemble a permanent lineup that quickly found its way across Finland before reaching audiences in the United Kingdom, Germany, and throughout Europe. One hat led naturally to another, each one helping turn an idea into something audiences could experience together.

Blending psychobilly with punk rock, garage rock, surf, and rockabilly, De La Rocka draws equally from classic horror, science fiction, gothic imagery, and B-movie culture. Their debut album, Nightmare Reborn, welcomed guest appearances from Titch of Klingonz, Vic of Koffin Kats, members of Hola Ghost and Sick Sick Sinners, and Hanna Hush on “Voodoo Queen,” while the standalone single “The Vampire” featured Dax Dragster of Godless Wicked Creeps. Independence has never meant working in isolation. For Panu, it has opened the door to collaborations that celebrate the people and the music that inspired the project in the first place.

The band’s calendar has grown to include appearances at Nummirock, Bedlam Breakout, Summertime Is Back in Elm, and the Rockabilly cruise, along with perfomances at venues including On the Rocks in Helsinki, Bar Loose, Semifinal, and Tavastia Club, while tours have carried them across Northern Europe and into the United Kingdom. Away from the stage, Panu oversees merchandise, vinyl releases, international logistics, and events like Psycho Sanatorium held at Varjobaari, giving just as much attention to everything surrounding the music as the songs themselves. The hats never stop revolving.

Wearing many hats was never about doing everything alone. It was about opening doors that didn’t exist before. Panu wears many hats because every one of them creates another opportunity for someone else. Those hats became invitations. Invitations for legendary musicians to collaborate, for audiences to discover new bands, and for friends, fans, and fellow artists to gather around something worth sharing. The hats never come off because the work is never only about one person. It is about everything that becomes possible when one person cares enough to keep putting on the next one, making De La Rocka — a band worth featuring — and always worth watching.
